The copyright duration for "The Great Gatsby" comes to an end
22/07/2020
On January 01, 2021, duration of the copyright for the F.Scott Fitzgerald’s famous novel “The Great Gatsby” comes to an end. It means that the story about the rich man Jay Gatsby becomes public, so its plot and characters can be used in other fictional works.
The writer Michael Farris Smith has already used this fact and wrote the book titled “Nick”. It is about the storyteller, Nick Carraway, whose personality and fate were not thoroughly described by F.Scott Fitzgerald in the novel. On the opposite, “Nick” tells us in details what Carraway’s life had been before he met Gatsby.
Smith
confesses that he feels sympathy for this character as for the man who has not
found himself in his 30-ies and bears a burden of the past.
If the novel were published now, it would violate a copyright. That’s why “Nick” will come out on January 5, 2021. First of all, it will appear in the USA and then in Great Britain. It is still unknown whether the book will be translated in Ukrainian.
